This project involved the comprehensive redesign and renovation of a non-descript 90s era home. The existing structure was plagued by poor architectural flow, excessive bulkheads, and limited connection to the surrounding landscape. The primary objective was to transform this house into a Mediterranean-style villa that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings.
In bringing this transformation to fruition we set out to emphasize open spaces, natural light and a connection to the outdoors with all rooms opening out onto a central courtyard with pool and views onto the impressive rock-wall-retainer, established palms and cycads.
Large, dated skylights were removed that made rooms including the interleading passage unbearably hot. These areas were slabbed and layouts were altered introducing en-suites to all bedrooms with the incorporation of a pyjama lounge. This in turn contributed to improved flow and functionality by eliminating unnecessary divisions and creating a more fluid, optimal layout.
Terraces were added to the garden using Corten steel and brown aggregate gravel was introduced as a ground cover to further accentuate the Mediterranean theme.
Outdated ceramic tiles were removed in favour of reclaimed parquet flooring laid in herringbone pattern. The inherent red colouring of the Rhodesian Teak parquet was eliminated by a double bleach process bringing out a more contemporary, warm honey-colouring.
The building interior and exterior was previously finished in an unsightly scratch plaster. We decided to change this and added a skim plaster by hand for an organic, uneven finish.
Moreover, we could not find an existing exterior paint colour that would accentuate the desired look, so we decided to mix our own using cement and river sand with a blend of natural dyes and pigments. We achieved this through trial and error until the final blend ratio was arrived at. This was applied using a Tyrolean machine onto the exterior walls, resulting in a highly durable and natural, textured wall finish that immediately brought the vision home.
The successful implementation of all the above resulted in a Mediterranean villa that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living. The property now boasts an easy-living and functional layout, enhanced views, and a strong connection to its natural surroundings. The transformation has not only improved the aesthetic appeal of the property but also significantly enhanced its value and liveability.
