Project Overview
“The Greige” is a modern, minimalist 950 sq. ft. apartment tailored for a young family of three in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. Inspired by the client’s desire for black and grey tones, the design balances sleek aesthetics with child-friendly features, enhanced by warm timber flooring and curved edges for safety.
Design Concept
The essence of “The Greige” lies in a minimalist yet refined design approach that embraces the apartment’s limited space. Every detail has been curated to create a visually open and organized environment without compromising on warmth or personality. Key design choices include rounded cabinetry for safety, multi-functional furniture, and custom lighting to enhance space perception and usability.
Design Features and Solutions
Curved Cabinetry for Safety:
Rounded edges were integrated into cabinetry and furniture throughout for a safe, inviting look.
Space-Saving TV Console & Dining Bench Combo:
To address the challenges of limited space, the designer created a unified structure combining the TV console with a dining bench. This feature conserves space and eliminates the need for dining chairs on both sides, providing a streamlined layout for family activities and movement.
Multi-functional Altar at Entrance:
A modern altar doubles as an entry feature with a backlit feature wall, maintaining function and style upon entry.
Curved Kitchen Island:
The kitchen features a curved-edge island, complementing the overall theme while maximizing flow in a compact layout.
Extended Design for Dining & TV Console:
The TV console extends to the dining bench, creating visual continuity and accentuated with LED lighting.
Maximized Storage in TV Console:
Storage was a critical consideration for this small apartment. We transformed the TV console into a comprehensive storage solution, with accessible side and top doors. Integrated LED lighting enhances its design and functionality.
Textured Backdrop & Curved Ceiling:
Texture-painted walls and a curved plaster ceiling with hidden lighting add depth and a soft aesthetic to the monochrome palette.
Timber Flooring for Warm Contrast:
Timber flooring warms the space, providing balance to the cool black and grey tones.
Anti-Glare Lighting for Function:
Anti-glare lighting is used strategically for task-focused areas without creating harshness.
Master Bedroom & Guest Room Design
In the master bedroom, a full-height, fabric-textured bedhead and custom lighting soften the space. The guest room features a low bedhead extending to a compact table and wardrobe, keeping with the minimalist theme.
