Modern kitchens allow one to perform many activities in a tight setting, but this efficiency ignores the possibility of multi-tasking and collaboration and takes away organic sharing and learning experiences. By adding designed inefficiency to the kitchen, this collective living complex in downtown Boston aims to create positive cooking and sharing environment for families with children. Decomposing the original composition of kitchen, housing plan and lifestyle, the project expand physical and psychological scopes of kitchen and could potentially facilitate children’s learnings of different food cultures and change the general perception of gender roles in domestic labor. The social housing complex also celebrates the history of immigrant neighborhood and its proximity to Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park with porous ground floor, sustainable façade, and a diverse type of units from studio to 3 bedrooms that satisfies different structures of families regardless of age.
