The project involved the total renovation of a Period House in Dublin.
The existing house was in need of extensive renovations and the clients wanted to extend the house into the garden.
Georgian buildings are normally Articulated to the street façade, however the rear of the buildings are often ill considered. The internal make up of the house was comprised of many cellular rooms, most of which were suffering from poor light. The basement level bedrooms in particular were in bad shape not only with poor light but also damp and poorly ventilated.
The street façade was a protected, however we had freedom to do what we wanted to the rear.
The amendments to the street façade were to clean these up and replace windows and doors were possible. To the rear we had the opportunity not just to fix all of the things that were wrong with the house, but we were able to open the house out to the garden not just on the upper level but also to create a basement level courtyard.
Addressing the light problem. As stated above we opened the basement level to the garden with patio doors and a lower landscaped courtyard. On the middle floor we created a modern open plan living space. We have a covered terrace of the KDL ( Kitchen /dining Living) We maximise the suns movements with a series of large skylights above the KDL. The top floor was opened up with both Large glazed sections and roof lights.
Movement and respecting the integrity of the Georgian house. We wanted to respect the integrity of the existing building so we introduced panelled walls with concealed doors, we then use a crittall door so there is a transparency from the entrance hall to gain views through the house to the rear garden. The house in essence moves from a Georgian structure to a modern one. Transforming the dark cellular house to a house of openness full of light while respecting its historical past & creating a home that our clients & future generations will enjoy while protecting this historical structure.
