This is an architectural work of comprehensive reform in a heritage building of industrial style from 1876, located in the center of the city of Tarragona (Spain).
The site was an old factory, on the ground floor, with a surface area of 400m2, and the new use of housing combines the original materials of stone and brick, with a clean and simple architecture, causing the access of light to the entire house, through large windows.
Conceptually, and as an interior organization, the idea has been to place a new box within the existing industrial box. This new box contains the most private rooms and spaces, not touching the original ceiling of curved vaults, leaving the other most common uses of the house outside, providing them with spaciousness and visual and spatial continuity. This central box is marked by structural metal profiles, which protrude from it in a cantilever, extending the extension of this central box to the spaces that surround it, without touching the existing limits.
As it is a premises that only has one façade through which to ventilate and obtain light, a gallery space has been designed which covers the entire façade, creating a lung and filter between the interior and exterior, blurring the boundaries of the different spaces and improving the climatic functioning of the house.
This gallery space connects with all the rooms of the house, which also have access from the back, generating a circular and continuous circulation, without architectural barriers.
As for the distribution and interior uses, the house is distributed on a single floor. We find a large hall, which acts as a filter with the street and leads directly to the kitchen-dining-living room space. The kitchen is part of a closet of more than 20 meters in length, which absorbs different uses (kitchen, pantry, guest bathroom, office, library, storage) depending on which part of the house it is located in. The passageway that accompanies the closet leads to the private rooms, which become increasingly private as they move away from the first space. This passageway varies in width, using the long closet to accommodate different uses, such as the study room or the music room.
The residential complex has a total of 3 bedrooms, one of which is a suite with a dressing room and bathroom, plus another bathroom that serves the other two rooms, and a laundry room with a drying area. All these rooms are lit and ventilated through the aforementioned gallery.
Finally, the use of colors and materials has been established through a premise: the old must be kept as it is, and the new must be neutral and minimalist. Stone, brick, black iron and white walls are the guiding thread of the work.
2.17 ARQUITECTURA
We are a young architecture studio, restless and eager to work and collaborate with different professionals in order to adapt to the projects proposed to us, and to be able to take on all types of assignments.
Far from creating a standardized product or that follows aesthetic patterns, for 2.17ARQ, each project and each client opens up a new world of possibilities for the study, which allows us to know in depth the needs of each order and thus achieve an optimal result.
The study of materials, new energy generation systems, sensitivity to the environment and the desire to adapt to the customer are some of the principles that we cannot and do not want to lose sight of every time we start to draw the first sketches of the projects .
