This charming Upper East side apartment was transformed into an airy oasis for modern living and family gatherings. Needing a place to escape the buzzing energy of city living, our client desired a tranquil sanctuary for relaxation while having space to host her family for the holidays.
Boasting inlaid floors and arched doorways, this home retains it’s original details from the 1930’s adding depth and richness to the final design. Blending eras and interweaving modern details without sacrificing it’s historic elements resulted in a home brimming with personality, warmth, and calm.
To achieve the feel of serenity, tonal layers of white and cream colors echo throughout the home to enhance the natural daylight pouring in from the northern exposure. Upon entry into the living room, the fine details in the area rug shimmer softly providing contrast against bold statement pieces like the vintage slipper chair and walnut dining table. Gold leopard print fabric radiates fearlessly with lively eye-catching intensity. Brass metal hardware and lighting catch the sun and punctuate the space throughout giving it a warm glimmer.
Spending many years on the Upper East Side, our client sought a design in keeping with the neighborhood and reflected her personal experiences. Objects and artwork collected over her travels were to comfortably be situated on display in the new design. Balancing them with contemporary elements was essential in showcasing their novelty. Whats more, keeping a clear line of sight throughout made for an airy atmosphere allowing special pieces to stand out.
Dramatic flourishes like marble slabs and Murano glass recall the elegance of classic Italian design. Showcasing the natural beauty of stone, its cascading movement can be found in the kitchen backsplash and bathroom walls creating the sense of expansion. It’s smooth surface was seamlessly assembled resulting in a monolithic and impressive appearance.
Transportive chinoiserie wallpaper adorns the walls of the make up vanity illustrating a sweet garden scene filled with birds and blooming flowers, recalling the wallpaper in our client’s former home. Framing its view is the primary bedroom cloaked in shades of white and soft textures. Velvet drapery and the New Zealand wool rug set the foundation for a quiet and restful bedroom muting outside noise and light. Welcoming a good night’s sleep, the bed wrapped in a boucle fabric conjures a cloud floating in space.
Like the final polish on a piece of jewelry, our client’s artwork ornament her walls adding personalization and history to every room. A far-reaching canvas painted by Jim Gingrich makes a bold impression at the entry. Laurie Simmon’s Walking Petit Four is the centerpiece that wows in the Foyer. And a Damien Hurst’s Spot Painting leaps across the wall bringing color and energy to the living room.
Humming with life, our client’s home balances the past and the present exciting the senses while feeling grounded.
