The client’s requested several custom designed furniture pieces throughout their home. One of the primary pieces was a unique and one-of-a-kind dining table that would be functional art. This custom dining table is made of oak and metal. The tabletop is 12’ long by 42” wide by 30” high and the oak top is 2” thick. For the top, a custom stain color was selected to coordinate with the dining chairs, built-in leather banquet and the rest of the modern kitchen design. The table base design was inspired by the Lake Tahoe natural landscape using an abstract, modern, and organic branch style with a cantilevered concept to keep the design modern, clean, sleek, and elegant. Most of the weight was distributed in the center with one long leg making the overall look of a cantilevered appearance. These clients love to entertain so it needed to seat up to 10 to 12 people comfortably and the client wanted the seating to be a little flexible with 4 side chairs, 2 head chairs and a built-in leather bench on one side with hidden storage. When creating the layout for the legs the side chairs and the head chairs needed to be considered to ensure that those seated in those chairs could sit comfortably at the table without running their knees into the base. Also, had to consider those sliding in and out on the bench side so that they could move in and out with little difficulty or discomfort. Laying out the placement of the legs also required proper distribution of weight so the table sits solidly and does not tilt or wobble. In the beginning part of the build the table did have a slight wobble, so we added one smaller branch to completely remove the slight wobble but kept the overall cantilevered look and feel of the base. After several months of concept and design then build time, we were able to install this custom unique piece of functional art into the newly completed new construction home that was also completely designed by the principal interior designer. It is a favorite statement piece in the client’s home that they enjoy using and sharing with their guests.
