Nestled within Suzhou’s renowned Yangcheng Lake Leisure Tourism Resort, the hotel boasts beautiful scenery embraced by water on three sides. It harmoniously blends into the lakeside garden, resembling a traditional courtyard and offering an unparalleled retreat.
Upon accepting this project, we were faced with a two-year timeline before the owner’s planned opening date. Given the tight time limit, the major challenge was to transcend superficial Suzhou stereotypes and imbue the space with the unique cultural essence of Xiangcheng District, while aligning with Banyan Tree’s romantic and luxurious brand identity. The goal was to create a distinctive resort destination with a competitive edge, setting it apart from the existing Banyan Tree in Suzhou.
Therefore, we drew inspiration from the private residence of a renowned local historical figure, Shen Zhou, and integrated the essence of Xiangcheng’s ten traditional crafts, known as the “Ten Wonders of Xiangcheng” into the design, evoking a secluded haven for literary elites amidst the picturesque lakes and mountains.
By strategically arranging public areas and guestrooms along the lakeshore, we maximized the views, ensuring guests are embraced by the serenity of lakes from arriving, dining, to living. The entrance, adorned with the water feature and a classic moon gate inspired by Jiangnan gardens, sets the tone for the journey ahead. The lobby showcases the imperial kiln bricks from the “Ten Wonders of Xiangcheng,” complemented by translucent glass bricks, creating an ethereal atrium lounge that blends past with present. The Chinese ink painting screen behind the front desk, Suzhou embroidery-adorned ceilings, lake-blue furniture and carpets—every detail exudes the charm of a waterside town. The Chinese restaurant sparkles with precious K’o-ssu silk embroideries as art pieces, enhancing the dining experience. The spa’s soaking pools, inspired by the kilns that produced the imperial bricks, offer a captivating cave-like thermal experience, inviting guests into a world of tranquility. Guestrooms integrate cultural tributes such as pearl-inspired lamps, violin bow-shaped door handles, and lake-textured screens, honoring local heritage and ecology while creating an immersive retreat.
After its opening, the hotel received widespread acclaim from hotel operators, owners, and guests alike, quickly distinguishing itself in the region and has become a popular destination for leisure in Suzhou.
